Expiry & fees

The money itself does not expire, but the plastic carries a valid-thru date. If that date passes with funds left, the issuer will send a replacement card. Some issuers charge an inactivity fee after 12 months without use — the cardholder agreement lists it.

Good to know

  • Keep the purchase receipt until the first successful check — it is what the issuer asks for if a card was never activated.
  • Vanilla cards have no PIN; online stores only need the number, expiration date, security code and the ZIP code you registered.
  • Split payments work when you tell the cashier the exact remaining balance first.
  • The purchase fee is paid once at the register; check the cardholder agreement for any fee after long inactivity.
