Visa Gift Card Balance — How to Check

Visa gift cards are prepaid cards issued by banks, so the balance is held by the issuer named on the back, not by Visa itself. Check it on that issuer's website or by calling the toll-free number printed on the card.

What you need

  • The 16-digit card number on the front
  • The expiration (valid thru) date on the front
  • The 3-digit security code on the back

Where to check

  • Online
  • By phone

2 ways to see the balance on a Visa card, in the order we recommend trying them.

Expiry & fees

The money itself does not expire, but the plastic carries a valid-thru date. If that date passes with funds left, the issuer will send a replacement card. Some issuers charge an inactivity fee after 12 months without use — the cardholder agreement lists it.

How to check a Visa gift card balance

Only the methods that actually work for Visa cards, step by step.

  1. Method 1 · Online

    Check on the issuer's website

    1. 1Open the balance website printed on the back of the card — it differs by issuer, so use the one on your card rather than a search result.
    2. 2Enter the 16-digit card number, the expiration date and the 3-digit security code.
    3. 3The current balance and recent transactions appear. Most issuers also let you register a ZIP code here, which many online stores require at checkout.
  2. Method 2 · By phone

Call the number on the card

    1. 1Call the toll-free number printed on the back of the card.
    2. 2Follow the prompts for a balance inquiry and enter the card number, expiration date and security code on the keypad.
    3. 3The balance is read back to you. Note it in The Wallet Station app so you do not have to call again.

Good to know

  • Activate the card before checking: a card that has not been activated at purchase shows no balance.
  • Register a ZIP code on the issuer site before shopping online, otherwise address checks can decline the card.
  • Registers cannot charge more than the balance. For a bigger purchase, tell the cashier the exact amount to put on the gift card and pay the rest another way.
  • Gas pumps and hotels place holds larger than the purchase; pay inside or use another card there.
